Google Ads is Quietly Giving AI More Control

Starting this month, Google has begun automatically upgrading campaigns currently using Automatically-Created Assets and campaign-level broad match keyword targeting to AI Max campaigns. This switch is also coming for Dynamic Search Ad campaigns, but that transition has been postponed until February 2027.

Google touts AI Max as "the next generation of Dynamic Search" ads, hailing it as a new era for Search and a "strategic shift from manual maintenance to scalable, AI-powered growth."

Along with improvements in delivery and optimization, Google has also been improving functionality across targeting, campaign workflows, and reporting, giving advertisers more control and insights for these relatively automatic ads and campaigns.

Key Takeaway:

AI Max may improve reach, performance, and scale. But advertisers (especially those with strict compliance and guidelines) still need to carefully inspect search terms, landing-page expansion, brand controls, location settings, and AI-generated messaging. Human oversight is still needed to at least crosscheck the output of AI campaigns. When it comes to your keywords, spend, and services, Google doesn't always know best. Be sure to put guardrails and restrictions in place.

Inside OpenAI's Ad Rush

OpenAI and ChatGPT are building a sprawling ad business at breakneck speed. Beginning in February of this year, OpenAI began testing advertising inside ChatGPT, adding a labeled box featuring a relevant brand below the AI-generated answer. Within a few short months, they've been rapidly expanding their offerings to advertisers, hoping to entice both Fortune 500 companies, as well as the small and medium-sized business that make up so much of Google and Meta's ad revenue.

The pace of the rollout of the OpenAI Ads Platform has been impressive, but its not without a few hiccups and glitches. Early advertisers see enormous potential, but have also encountered limited targeting, unsustainable CPMs, technical issues, and an immature measurement system.

The platform is on it's way to soothing those concerns, adding in auction-based bidding to bring down CPM costs, pay-per-click and carousel formats, and even experimenting with ad formats that open up custom ChatGPT chats about the product or service being advertised. There's still aways to go, but the outlook is promising.

Key Takeaway:

Advertising inside an AI-generated answer or conversation creates a potentially powerful position for advertisers. This is an opportunity to reach customers in the very early stages of their research process and influence how the customer understands the problem. And because chat queries are usually more detailed, this can eventually lead to more personalized advertising.

In this era, advertisers must understand more about intent, context, and the decisions being made beneath the question. ChatGPT has more than one billion weekly active users, and advertisers can't afford to sit on the sidelines as AI changes how people search for information and make buying decisions.

2026 Facebook Ads Benchmarks: Data & Trends for Your Industry

Not to be left out of the conversation, Facebook/Meta continues to be one of the most effective methods of online advertising. WordStream just released its 2026 Facebook Ads Benchmarks study, analyzing over 1,800 US-based Meta ad campaigns, across dozens of industries, to determine stats baselines and benchmarks advertisers and business-owners might expect for their own Meta ad campaigns.

Meta's advertising performance in key areas like CTR (click-through rate) and CPC (cost per click) improved year over year.

Key Stats:

→ Traffic Objective campaigns saw a +12.87% increase in CTR YoY and a -14.29% decrease in CPC YoY

→ Across all industries, the average CTR (click-through rate) for Facebook ads (Traffic campaigns) is 1.93%.

→ Across all industries, the average CPC for Facebook ads (Traffic campaigns) is $0.60

→ Leads Objective campaigns in 2026 saw an average CPL (cost per lead) of $27.39

→ 8.54%: the average CVR (conversion rate) across all industries for Leads Objective campaigns, a 10.62% increase YoY

Key Takeaways:

Don't be afraid to tread the paid social waters.

Meta Ads can be quite competitive, but the return can be worth it. Higher click-through rates and lower cost per click are encouraging signs for advertising on the platforms, even if your service isn't traditionally social-friendly. For comparison, Google's average CPC is more than double that of Meta. So while Google users may have high purchase intent, don't underestimate the importance of Meta & social media's role in piquing that interest. Paid social should be a crucial part of your overall digital strategy mix.

Experiment with your campaign objectives.

Stats for the Leads Objective campaigns also saw a boost in 2026, though not as strong as Traffic Objective campaigns. But Meta continues to improve its bidding, automation, and optimization capabilities, so now's the time to test new strategies based on your business goals. If cost-effective lead generation is the goal, Meta Ads is making strides in both.

What Cheese Curds and Pork Chops Can Teach Us About Brand Loyalty, Customer Experience, and Word-of-Mouth Marketing

The Ad Nomad at the State Fair

Well I'm at it again. This time I attended the Minnesota State Fair, where food is much more than something visitors buy between attractions - it's part of the tradition. Vendors such as The Mouth Trap Cheese Curds and Peterson's Pork Chops have transformed straightforward menu items into experiences people anticipate, share and revisit year after year.

Their success demonstrates the value of a clear offering, consistent execution and an emotional connection. It is a useful lesson for any business: the strongest brands do more than generate a transaction. They become part of something customers look forward to, talk about and want to experience again.
