You Don't Always Need to Shout the Loudest

The Ad NomadBy Jason "The Ad Nomad" Stanard

I'm officially off on my next Ad Nomad trip. As I kick off my journey as The Ad Nomad, I couldn't think of a more fitting place to start than Reykjavík (Iceland).

Coming from the U.S., where advertising is impossible to escape, Iceland feels refreshingly different. Fewer billboards (as of now I've seen maybe 2 in Reykjavík. Less noise. Less competition for attention. It's not that marketing doesn't exist here, it's that it seems far more intentional.

That got me thinking about the broader Nordic market.

The Scandinavian and Nordic countries aren't known for the loud, aggressive advertising culture we see elsewhere. Instead, brands tend to win through trust, design, authenticity, and long-term relationships. The marketing often feels understated but make no mistake, some of the world's strongest brands have emerged from this region.

There's a lesson here for marketers everywhere:

You don't always need to shout the loudest to be heard.

Sometimes the strongest brand isn't the one creating the most content—it's the one creating the most trust. As I explore Reykjavík, I'm curious to learn how local businesses think about customer acquisition, brand building, and digital marketing in a market where subtlety seems to outperform saturation.
