What Cheese Curds Can Teach Us About Building a Memorable Brand

How The Mouth Trap uses product focus and brand consistency to stay top of mind.

Some businesses don't need to explain what they do.

You hear the name, and you already know.

That was one of the things that stood out to me when I visited The Mouth Trap at the Minnesota State Fair.

If you've been to the fair, you probably know the name. A Minnesota State Fair staple since the 1980s, and a fan favorite, the Mouth Trap cheese curds have people hailing their praises all year round, and marking their calendars for when the fair comes back to town.

That's pretty impressive when you think about it.

At a massive event with hundreds of vendors competing for attention, how does one food stand become something people specifically seek out?

I had the chance to interview owner Dave while I was there. It got me thinking about what The Mouth Trap can teach us about building a memorable brand.

Be Known for Something

The Mouth Trap doesn't try to be everything to everyone.

Battered, deep-fried cheese curds. That's the only thing on the menu; and that's what they're known for.

That sounds simple, but there's a marketing lesson in it.

When people think about The Mouth Trap, they know exactly what they're getting.

A lot of businesses try to communicate everything they do at once.

  • More services.
  • More features.
  • More messages.

Sometimes, being memorable starts with doing one thing really well and making sure people remember you for it.

Consistency Builds Recognition

There's also something to be said for consistency.

The Mouth Trap has built a reputation around a product people know, love, and expect. The experience is familiar, which is exactly what you want when you're building a recognizable brand.

Customers don't have to figure out what the business is about. They already know. And when people know what to expect, they're much more likely to come back, recommend you, and tell someone else about you.

That's where branding starts to turn into word-of-mouth marketing.

Create an Experience People Remember

At a massive event like the Minnesota State Fair, there are endless things competing for people's attention.

Food. Games. Attractions. Vendors. Signs. Music. People.

Yet certain businesses become part of the experience.

That's what The Mouth Trap does well.

It's not just about selling cheese curds. It's about creating something people associate with the fair itself. Something they look forward to, talk about, and tell other people they have to try.

As a marketer, that's the part that interests me most. The best brands become part of people's memories.

Final Thoughts

The Mouth Trap reminded me that memorable marketing doesn't always require a complicated strategy.

Sometimes it starts with knowing what you're good at, delivering it consistently, and giving people a reason to remember you.

You don't have to be everything.

You just have to be known for something.

And when customers can easily explain what makes your business worth talking about, you've already built something a lot of brands spend years trying to create.
